Orang yang namanya ditulis dalam Death Note akan segera mati.lalu ryuk mejatuhkan buku dewa kematiannya di dunia manusia dan di temukan oleh light yagami,pemikiran seorang light yagami bahwa seharusnya kejahatan di dunia ini harus di hapuskan,tetapi lama-kelamaan polisi menemukan kejanggalan terhadap kematian penjahat-penjahat tersebut,lalu polisi bekerja sama dengan L (lucious law liet),berusaha mengungkap siapa pelaku pembunuhan berantai tersebut.Pembunuh tersebut di namakan kira,sebenarnya L sudah tau bahwa pelakunya adalah light yagami(kira),tetapi L masih mencari bukti yang kuat untuk menangkap light yagami,tak selang beberapa lama shingami lain yang bernama REM pun muncul di bumi dan memberikan bukunya kepada misa (kira kedua).
